The Homestead Steel Works’ Carrie Furnace was built in 1907. During its peak, the mill produced 1000 to 1250 tons of iron per day. The steel mill ceased production in the early 1980s, and Carrie Furnace and its hot-metal bridge now sit derelict. Guided tours of the historic site are available as a Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.
