The Mathies Coal Co., near New Eagle, Pa. (45 mins. south of Pittsburgh), opened in 1944. It was said to be the last bituminous coal mine in Pennsylvania to use rail haulage to transport the coal from the mine. The company closed abruptly in 2002, resulting in the unemployment of more than 150 employees.
